Communications and Emergency Planning During the Cold War

It was “strictly confidential”, obviously. Top secret. Yet during the years of the Cold War, some of Denmark’s sharpest minds were busy preparing the country’s telecommunications for the possible event of a nuclear apocalypse. If Denmark was attacked with nuclear weapons, the Post and Telegraph Service and the private telephone companies – in conjunction with NATO and the Danish Military and Civil Defence –were expected to ensure the continued functioning of vital government communications. A new research project at the Danish Post & Tele Museum will delve into the country’s telecommunications emergency planning during the formative period from 1945 to 1990.

A Great Tele Tree

When entering the foyer of Post & Tele Museum the wonderful sight of a 5½ metres tall tree meets the eye. Its green crown and the twittering birds flying high up in the air might lead our visitors to believe that they have gone astray and stepped directly from Købmagergade into a forest.

"A House with Connections" – now on the internet – Stories from Købmagergade III

Post & Tele Museum is placed in a house with many important connections to the history of communication: The Post Yard of Copenhagen with the Central Telegraph Station. Its history and functions are now being documented in six short films and with a selected picture material of the course of life in the house today and in the past.

A House with Connections - Communication in the Interwar Period II

In the middle of Købmagergade in Copenhagen stands a house which was the heart of telecommunication in Denmark for decades and the building stones of which were laid during the years after World War I. Since Post & Tele Museum moved into the historical premises, it has been possible for everybody to visit the offices that used to be reserved for employees within telegraphy, telephony, and broadcasting.
